"Political Sparring: TMC Likens PM Modi's Advisor to Modern-Day Mir Jafar Amid Historical Allegories"

top-news

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has ignited a fiery verbal duel by likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisor, Sanjeev Sanyal, to a “modern-day Mir Jafar,” adding an extra layer of historical drama to the political landscape.

The TMC’s sharp retort came in response to Sanyal’s recent podcast remarks, where he stirred controversy by questioning the aspirations of Kolkata’s Bengalis, labeling them as victims of a “poverty of aspirations” and aspiring to mere “antel” status. This scathing criticism didn’t go unnoticed as TMC promptly fired back, painting Sanyal as a traitor akin to Mir Jafar, a historical figure infamous for betrayal.

In the podcast, Sanyal’s words ignited a storm, suggesting that Kolkata’s society’s highest aspirations were limited to union leaders and intellectual gatherings, rather than tangible achievements. Drawing parallels with Mrinal Sen’s movies, he highlighted a perceived lack of ambition and action-oriented goals.

The term ‘Mir Jafar’ reverberates through Indian political history as a slur, notably resurfacing last year when the BJP branded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the “present-day Mir Jafar,” alleging foreign interventions for political gains. Mir Jafar’s infamy stems from his role in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, where he betrayed Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, paving the way for British rule.

Adding spice to the narrative, BJP’s Krishnagar Lok Sabha candidate ‘Rajmata’ Amrita Roy jumped into the fray, challenging the TMC’s historical narrative regarding Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy. Roy passionately defended her family’s legacy, emphasizing that Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy’s decisions during the Battle of Plassey were motivated by a desire to safeguard “Sanatan Dharma” against Siraj-ud-Daulah’s tyranny.

This verbal jousting reflects the intense political discourse in West Bengal, where historical allegories and contemporary criticisms collide. The TMC’s bold comparison of Sanyal to Mir Jafar injects an element of historical drama into the ongoing political narrative, showcasing the dynamism and fervor of electoral debates in the region.
